The Demolition of the old Caruthersville High School building, which was built in 1924, is finally complete. It has been a long two years since the tornado of April 2nd of 2006. Finally, the faculty and student body of CHS can rejoice in the fact that the demolition for the school has finally been accepted by the insurance companies and the state. Demolition began on October 22, 2008 after a ceremony was held in honor of the momentous event. The demolition crew began by starting one of the cranes and drove to a corner of the gymnasium. There, the driver began tearing down the south-east facing gym wall as well as the small breezeway between the high school and the gym. For the next few weeks, the demolition crew started tearing down the school - working their way from the east-facing wall to the south-facing wall. From there, the crew moved their way northward, tearing down the gym along the way. Next, they came back around and gathered the rubble from gym into a platform at the base of the north-facing wall of the main school building. They used this "platform" to tear down the 2nd and 3rd floors of the school. The crew spent less than a week tearing down the top floors and eventually started tearing down the first floor. Finally after 4 weeks of hard work, the demolition was finally complete on November 25, 2008. Now, the construction crew can come in and start laying downthe foundation for the new school. |
